I looks like there is a large trough in the jetstream right over the Midwest which would explain today's cold temperatures.  The cloud cover indicates there is probably high pressure in the atmosphere to the Southeast of us.

This map shows that prominent trough bringing Continental Polar air across the Midwest states.

This map shows that Northwest wind blowing down from Canada.  The other regional winds do not match as completely to the upper air jetstream patterns.
